(Suppliers build those agency commissions into their prices, so when you book on your own, rarely are you getting a reduced rate.) Typically you pay the cost of your trip, plus a reasonable service fee for researching and arranging details such as flights, transfers, train and driving routes, etc.

    These service fees ensure your advisor is working in your best interest vs. simply seeking out the highest commission. There are some advisors out there who don’t charge service fees for their time, but you can’t be sure they will follow through if no service agreement exists.
